If you could tell your younger self one piece of soccer advice, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to learn how to play many different positions, including defensive ones. I would warn him that he will wish he had learned how to play everywhere on the field once he is a little older and not as fast.
A shift in one’s ability and age, can change everything for a player. Those who are willing to help everywhere on the field, no matter their preferred player identity, end up playing for longer.
Riley has been captivated by the game of soccer both as a player and a coach for over 25 years. His love for soccer started out in Eastern Oregon and Southern Idaho’s youth and adult programs, representing many age divisions along the way, and now, landing in Florida, has become a proud component of the Ormond Beach competitive staff. Riley spent much of his playing career in a bilingual (Spanish/English) setting on the West Coast of the US, and has learned to enjoy the world’s diversity through his love and passion for this game. While he is newer to the competitive coaching world in Central Florida, he is in no shortage of passion for helping kids develop their skills and their understanding of the beautiful game.
Professionally, Riley has a background in Wildland firefighting and Forestry, where he took part in fire suppression tactics using helicopter aviation operations for the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Here in Florida, Riley has changed gears and has been involved in the Solar industry, helping Floridians embrace their love of the sun in unique ways.
Riley is also a proud father of four and enjoys the beach lifestyle with his wife, Raquel, and their family.
